Integrated vs Traditional Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Training

Motivations and demographics of I-6 and traditional 5+2 cardiothoracic surgery resident applicants: insights from an academic training program.
BACKGROUND: There are two training paths towards certification in cardiothoracic surgery: a) an integrated 6-year residency program in cardiothoracic surgery, or b) a general 5 year surgical residency followed by a 2 year Fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: what is the difference in the applicants to each program?

METHODS: a database review was performed.

RESULTS: Both groups had a similar percentage of female applicants, number of US medical graduates, additional degrees, and membership in Alpha Omega Alpha.
